Weddell ice edge

The northern edge of the northwestern Weddell pack ice, where the Weddell Gyre transports sea ice several hundred miles from south to north.  When it nears the open ocean, wave action shatters the pack into small pieces such as the ones shown here.  The shadow of our DC-8 is visible at lower-left.
