Plan of the Day for Thursday, April 20:

Updates:

  • All three aircraft surveyed the current target area today.
  • The Sally Ride team redeployed five Lagrangian floats and did some CTD sampling across the eddy in multiple sections.

 Aircraft plan and schedule:

  • All aircraft will continue to collect data over the same target area.
  • NET 1000: G-III SF#5 takeoff
  • 1130: Preflight meeting for B200 SF#13
  • NET 1200: MASS TO SF#8 takeoff
  • NET 1300: B200 SF#13 takeoff

 Ship and in situ plan:

  • The Sally Ride will continue a small-scale survey of the eddy and will start MVP profiling.
  • The bio team would like to do CTD casts around the Lagrangian floats.

 Aircraft outlook for Friday, April 21 for two sorties:

  • NET 0800: B200 SF#14 takeoff
  • NET 1400: B200 SF#15 takeoff

  • The new area of interest is turning out to be…interesting! The science team expects the experiment to focus on this area’s evolution for the foreseeable future.
  • All three aircraft were up in the air today surveying the current target area.
  • The Sally Ride continues to survey a small cyclonic eddy on the inflow front using EcoCTD and underway systems.
  • The Sally Ride team has also deployed five Lagrangian Floats on a conditioning and ballasting mission. One had to be recovered early today due to a failure, the remaining four are working well and are expected to be recovered late this afternoon.

Here is the S-MODE Plan of the Day for Tuesday, April 18:

Updates:

  • The science team has turned their focus to an area on the eastern side of the S-MODE domain, where small-scale eddies and instabilities appear to be peeling off of an inflow front.
  • The Sally Ride science party are finishing additional Seaglider and Wave Glider deployments today, and will then deploy Lagrangian floats. The ship is making survey passes across the current target front.
  • The B200 and MASS TO are also surveying the same target front today.
  • The G-III maintenance is complete and the aircraft is ready to go.

Here is the S-MODE Plan of the Day for Monday, April 17:

Updates:

  • Sally Ride is conducting a medium-scale scouting survey in the eastern (inflow) part of the ops domain. A Moving Vessel Profiler (MVP) is being used to provide quick coverage of underwater structure. The biology team has been sampling underway, and operating the pySAS radiometer on the bow of the ship.
  • All three S-MODE aircraft were hard down today, although the PRISM team did some instrument work, and their hangar calibration was set up, which is expected to be completed tonight.

Aircraft plan and schedule:

  • DopplerScatt and MASS also plan to scout the eastern part of the ops area with afternoon takeoffs. The G-III needs a tire change, and expects to receive it early tomorrow, although the domain looks to be fairly cloudy tomorrow anyway.
  • 1130: Preflight meeting for B200 SF#9
  • NET 1200: MASS TO SF#5 takeoff
  • NET 1200: G-III SF#3 takeoff (pending completion of aircraft maintenance)
  • NET 1300: B200 SF#10 takeoff

 Ship and in situ plan:

  • The Sally Ride will likely continue the scouting survey tomorrow, potentially focusing more closely on small-scale eddies and instabilities that may be present in the inflow front.

Plan of the Day for Sunday, April 16:

Updates:

  • The B200 completed its ninth flight of the campaign.
  • The Sally Ride deployed more floats and completed EcoCTD casts as well as a survey of the frontal region.

 Aircraft plan and schedule:

  • The B200, G-III, and MASS TO will all have a hard down day.

 Ship and in situ plan:

  • The Sally Ride will deploy an EM-APEX float and move east towards stronger features based on SST and color images. Wavegliders will also begin to head east.

Here is the Plan of the Day for Saturday, April 15:

Updates:

  • The B200 completed its eighth flight of the campaign, and the MASS Twin Otter its fourth. Both aircraft surveyed the northwest corner of the operations polygon.
  • The Sally Ride is completing a survey under the DopplerScatt and MASS flight paths, with EcoCTD casts planned later today. Seven Wave Gliders and two of the Seagliders are also surveying the same area. Weather/sea state continues to improve.

Aircraft plan and schedule:

  • The B200 will survey along the NW to SE SWOT track to try to find a new target.
  • The MASS TO will be hard down, while the G-III will have a maintenance day.
  • 0800: Preflight meeting for B200 SF#9
  • 0930: B200 SF#9 takeoff

  • The Sally Ride and all gilders will continue on their current surveys.

Plan of the Day for Friday, April 14:

Updates:

  • The large chlorophyll plume (“U-Turn”) continues to be an area of great interest for S-MODE, with all aircraft assets, plus the ship and gliders tracking its evolution.
  • The Sally Ride science party weathered a large storm overnight and got back to work at about 0800L this morning, completing the APEX float deployments.
  • The B200 completed its seventh flight of the campaign, the MASS Twin Otter its third, and the G-III its second.
  • An eighth Wave glider was successfully deployed from off the coast of Santa Cruz, CA

Aircraft plan and schedule:

  • The B200 and MASS TO will continue the survey the U-Turn, while the G-III will take a hard down day
  • 1030: Preflight meeting for B200 SF#8
  • 1200: B200 SF#8 takeoff
  • TBD mid-day: MASS TO SF#4 takeoff

  • The Sally Ride and Wave gliders will survey the chlorophyll plume along with the aircraft remote sensing instruments.

Updates:

  • The intrepid Sally Ride science party has nearly completed the APEX float deployments, in addition to deploying surface drifters and performing CTD casts. Deck operations will cease for ~24 hours as sea state conditions deteriorate.
  • The B200 completed its sixth flight of IOP-2, while the MASS TO completed its second. The G-III was a no-go today due to clouds.

  • 0700: G-III PRISM preflight begins
  • NET 0900: G-III SF#2 takeoff (weather dependent)
  • 0900: Preflight meeting for B200 SF#7
  • NET 1030: B200 SF#7 takeoff

  • After sea state conditions improve, Sally Ride will steam eastward and uCTD/EcoCTD operations will begin.
  • Wave gliders are surveying in the northern part of the ops area. An eighth wave glider is scheduled to be deployed Thursday from Santa Cruz.
  • Two Seagliders to continue operating lines in the southern portion of the ops area. Two Seagliders are moving to the strong SSH gradient region west of the plume region.

  • Great day for S-MODE!
  • Sally Ride entered the ops area today and she surveyed an exceptional chlorophyll plume.
  • With the weather cooperating, all three aircraft flew with all instruments working nominally.

  • NET 1030: G-III SF#2 takeoff (weather dependent)

Updates:

  • The LaRC G-III has arrived at Moffett Field!
  • The B200 flew its fourth science flight of IOP-2, but no MASS or MOSES data was collected due to fog/clouds.
  • The RV Sally Ride is transiting north and is scheduled to arrive at the ops area early morning tomorrow.
  • The science team has picked a new target shown below – a large chlorophyll plume pictured in red. The ship, aircraft, and gliders will gravitate toward this feature starting tomorrow.
