Susanne,
Sorry for the change. Issue at hand is that SIO is scheduling ship meetings in San Diego early the following week (both ships will be in port) and we are trying to minimize the stress on those who need to attend both meetings. Sorry.
WRT surface drifters, the project office has been discussing what to do. It seems we will likely purchasing several (~4) with the goal that they 1) serve as a backup if the Lagrangian Float fails, 2) provide another way of characterizing inertial mixed layer currents and 3) enable us **maybe** to tag water parcels (although there is very little mesoscale energy at Station P). We cannot plan to follow both the surface and subsurface floats (although we likely will do that as the mean currents are small). I have done these deployments for VERTIGO and found that there is little one can do quantitative with a few drifters in a production-flux study (although I am fine being wrong). Know that velocity profiles will be available on each ship via the ship’s ADCP as well as the nearby PMEL mooring. So we will not be blind. Last, this is yet another uncosted request and if does happen it will come out of my budget (and I’m not to happy about it…).

I know there are lots of factors at play, but we agreed on the earlier dates and I have fiercely defended these dates on my schedule and made subsequent travel plans around the May 21-23 meeting. Participating via conference line or skype is very difficult and I find highly ineffective. Basically, that means our team won't be able to participate in this important coordination, both within the process ship and with the survey ship. Please be aware and let's try to nail things down before hand.

Flow in the surface layer (where many measurements are made) and below (100+m, where floats will be placed) is different, and often in opposite directions. The surface floats will give us at least an indication of how different the flows directions and velocities are. This will be an important measurements to have to link surface characteristics and processes with depth.

>> As you recall, our May meeting was planned for 21-23, somewhere on east coast. However, recently we found out that Scripps will hold a meeting for chief scientist in San Diego, that will happen on May 29th (more about that meeting a bit later).
>> In order to ease the travel for some, and still have our meeting prior to them meeting with ship people, we decided to move our meeting for later that original week- 23, 24 and 25 of May. Meeting will be held in Santa Barbara.
>>
>> Idea is that at least one PI should be present from each group - in case if the group has 2 sets of measurements (e.g. Behrenfeld's group has "physiology part" and "optics part") it would be great that two PIs are present there, so appropriate people are there to answer questions about specific measurements. Also, it is better if we keep students, techs and similar out of this meeting (if they are not crucial for decision making process).
>>
>> Since that will be our last meeting before we sail out, this should be the meeting where will be going over our final plans, and finalize any little details remaining.
>>
>> We will be sending details soon, we are still looking in meeting venue (probably on campus) and hotel (swanky hotel this time). As always we will have a conference line open...Please contact Dave or I directly if you have a problem with anything.
