Dear ARCSIX science team,
We completed our pre-mission meeting last week. We made progress but have lots of things left to do. During the all-hands on Tuesday (4/23, 2pm EDT, see link below), we will provide a summary of last week's meeting, discuss the range of possible flight plans, and get to the 'homework' from last week (assessment of the scorecard versus the submitted 1-pagers and instrument-specific needs; see my email from last week).
Logistics:
I would like to follow up on my brief email from last week and offer a few solutions that Hal and Dan/ESPO have found in response to your feedback. My role is to keep collecting feedback and find solutions with Hal and Dan. They have been and continue to be in regular communication with the base to avoid any future surprises. You may of course also contact Dan directly to voice your concerns, but I recommend that you always copy me (or Hal, as appropriate) as well.
Before getting to some of the steps taken since last Friday, I would like to disperse one concern that some of you had: "We have too many people in Pituffik who are not working directly with the aircraft or with the instruments." That is actually not the case. We have worked diligently to arrive at a slim team. For example, we are only about half the size of the CAMP2Ex field team, even though we have a third aircraft. Almost all the participants will be flying and/or working with instruments.
* Do not worry about bedding, sheets, pillows, pillowcases, blankets and towels. ESPO will provide and ship everything we need.
* It is possible and easy to do laundry.
* While we may not have a full-size desk in some of the double-occupancy rooms, every room will have a table that can be used as a desk (ESPO will provide them).
* Common spaces will be available to be used as offices.
* We will have a meeting room – flight planning and science meetings will occur there.
* Dan organized internet connectivity; wireless will be available in all rooms.
* Do not count on sufficient bandwidth to ship all of your data home; be ready to back up your data locally.
* More information on data handling and presentation to follow.
* If you fly with the C-130 (Dan's email), please note that you have the option to board at WFF as well (not preferred, but possible). In that case the luggage would still need to arrive there early for the loadmaster to pallet it. Reminder that the WFF option is inconvenient for a number of reasons; Burlington was intended to make things easier for everyone. If you do prefer WFF (e.g., locals living in the area), we can provide specifics as needed.
* Room sharing vs. single occupancy. If you haven't already found a roommate, we will come up with a system to get that done. Equity is an important consideration. Some of you have contacted Dan or me to request a single room, and Dan has granted the requests in some cases. If we simply run out of rooms as a result, we may have to decide on a case-by-case basis. If you feel you absolutely need a single-occupancy room, please let Dan/me know now. We don't want to do this last-minute, only to find out that we simply can't fit people anymore. Tents are not an option (I am serious – think of the polar bears). Please be conscientious about requesting single-occupancy rooms; very few are availble.
I think this covers everything for now.
Thank you for all the work you are constantly putting into the mission. I certainly am not taking it for granted.
Sebastian
