Plan of the Day for Saturday, October 23 (all times Pacific):

Announcements:

Today, the R/V Oceanus reported a mechanical issue and had to cut their survey short to go to port in San Francisco. The extent of the repair is unknown at this point. The team was working on contingency planning after the news. The Scripps team expects to arrive in San Francisco tomorrow by midday to start repairs on the damaged Wave Gliders. This situation is evolving, and we will know more in the coming days.

In better news, the Twin Otter with the Scripps MASS instrument reported an excellent first flight for the S-MODE Pilot campaign, coincident with the third B200 flight. All instruments report good data, and we will have our first airborne remote sensing velocity intercomparison of the Pilot - a major focus of the investigation. A clear day allowed for superb MOSES data collections for the first time in the Pilot campaign and a Landast-8 underflight by MASS can be used by the biology team members. These measurements were made in a region with strong submesoscale current variability with significant ground truth from two Saildrones and one Oceanus section, unfortunately without density profiles. This also marks the first detailed measurements of submesoscale features, a second major focus of the investigation.

Saturday and Sunday, October 23-24

  *   1400: Daily Control Center meetings
  *   Three additional Saildrones come online
  *   Oceanus docked at Pier 19 in San Francisco
     *   Assessment of mechanical issue
     *   Wave Glider repair
  *   No flights - a major atmospheric river event will come through the SF Bay Area over the weekend producing high winds and heavy rain

Monday, October 25

  *   Afternoon flights for B200 and Twin Otter
