Dear all,
I wanted to send a quick note to congratulate everyone on a successful
pilot campaign. Earlier this week, I was asked how the S-MODE campaign
went, and I said, "It went perfectly!"
The truth is that the campaign didn't go perfectly at all, but the team
and the plan were clever enough to pull it off anyway. It went better
than we imagined it could, especially in the face of the challenges
(global pandemic, "double-bomb" cyclone, historic atmospheric river
events, extreme waves, mechanical problems, etc.). The aircraft,
shipboard, uncrewed-vehicle, and control-center teams worked hard to
conduct a campaign that is different than the ones we've done before.
We collected a data set that will stimulate new insights by the science
team and the larger oceanographic community. We also worked out a way
of operating that will serve us well in the Intensive Operating Periods
coming up in October 2022 and April 2023, when we will really have the
full complement of measurements. The data set, with the "velocity
extravaganza" of the last few days of the campaign when all velocity
measuring platforms were collecting good data in the same small region,
will also help us make progress on our more challenging science goals in
the IOPs.
A more detailed list of the team's achievements during the pilot
campaign is attached, along with a compilation of the three
science-highlight reports Erin Czech sent to NASA Headquarters during
the campaign. I am excited to see what new things the team will learn,
and what we can do in the larger IOP campaigns!
Thank you,
Tom
