Hi everybody,
This week we will be having our first PACE-PAX dry run. Our kickoff begins at 9amPDT / Noon EDT, and is followed by a weather briefing and initial flight planning activity. A full schedule for the week is attached. You should have received invites for each meeting – if not please contact Sommer Nicholas or Judy Alfter. Depending on your role in PACE-PAX, you may need to attend some, or all, the meetings. We will also record each one.
Monday I’ll give a kickoff presentation, slides for which are in our shared files: https://espo.nasa.gov/pace-pax/system/files/group_files/PACE-PAX_DryRunSept_Kickoff.pptx. This will be followed by an introduction to weather and aerosol forecasting by Rei and Mijeong. The first ‘flight’ will be Tuesday so we will begin to draw up plans afterwards.
We will make plans guided by our tracking spreadsheet: https://espo.nasa.gov/pace-pax/system/files/group_files/PACE-PAX_VTM_Tracking_0.xlsx . I will describe how this spreadsheet works in the kickoff meeting. You may want to download it and follow along.
We have struggled to get flight planning software working, so for this first dry run we will use Google Earth. Everything I’ve gathered so far is in a KML file in our shared files: https://espo.nasa.gov/pace-pax/system/files/group_files/PACE-PAX.kml . I’ve made up three plans for Tuesday which are described in the kickoff presentation. They will of course have to be modified based on forecasts.
We’re tracking issues and actions on a google spreadsheet: https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fspreadsheets%2Fd%2F1GDzWnhEjWU66YUdgX0P2qwmbvAn3RGKrNZAVStWTudM%2Fedit%23gid%3D0&data=05%7C01%7Cpace-pax%40espo.nasa.gov%7Cceb83b74d5cc424bd55208dbb24296af%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C638299771290284138%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=HkmKmbGzxFaIuK%2Bf4kzW9M3Z%2FZbl1IHzjgo7Udk%2FvKk%3D&reserved=0<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fspreadsheets%2Fd%2F1GDzWnhEjWU66YUdgX0P2qwmbvAn3RGKrNZAVStWTudM%2Fedit%23gid%3D0&data=05%7C01%7Cpace-pax%40espo.nasa.gov%7Cceb83b74d5cc424bd55208dbb24296af%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C638299771290284138%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=HkmKmbGzxFaIuK%2Bf4kzW9M3Z%2FZbl1IHzjgo7Udk%2FvKk%3D&reserved=0> This is a place to provide feedback, identify gaps in our plan, or other things we will need to follow.
The purpose of this dry run is to understand how we plan our activities and how this relates to forecasting. We will have another dry run over the winter, hopefully in person, with greater fidelity and detail.
As always, I feel fortunate to work with all of you. I look forward to our first group activity.
