The fine print in this notice, in case you missed it:
* You will no longer receive End User Digest messages about spam messages that were blocked from your Inbox.
* Instead, spam messages will now appear in your Junk Email folder. (You may want to check it regularly because sometimes real emails end up there.) If you have turned off junk email filtering, spam messages will appear in your Inbox.
* Refer to Using the Junk Folder in Outlook (KB0019462)<https://esd.nasa.gov/nav_to.do?uri=%2Fkb_view.do%3Fsysparm_article%3DKB0019462> for instructions to manage your Junk Email folder settings.
Have a magnificent Monday,

Subject:
Microsoft Defender Replacing Proofpoint to Protect Email and More
What’s Happening:
On November 20, Microsoft Defender for Office 365 will replace Proofpoint as the agency’s malware, phishing and threat protection solution. But that’s not all Microsoft Defender can do. In addition to protecting your Inbox, a future Microsoft Defender enhancement will extend protection to Teams to ensure links posted in chats and channels and links within documents are safe to click.
For the implementation of Microsoft Defender, incoming and outgoing email from or to external (non-NASA) sources may experience intermittent delays during the following time period:
Beginning:
7:00 p.m. ET on Friday, November 20
Ending:
11:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, November 22
NOTE: An upcoming agency-wide mission freeze for NASA’s SpaceX CREW-1 launch is currently scheduled for November 14. In the event the launch date gets rescheduled due to weather, the implementation of Microsoft Defender will be rescheduled as follows:
If the Crew-1 launch happens on:
Implementation will begin at 7:00 p.m. ET on:
Saturday, November 14
Friday, November 20
Sunday, November 15
Friday, November 20
Wednesday, November 18
Friday, November 20
Thursday, November 19
Monday, November 23
Friday, November 20
Tuesday, November 24
An additional communication will be sent if the Microsoft Defender implementation schedule changes.
Additional Information:
Safe Attachments
As with Proofpoint, certain file attachment types, as defined by the Security Operations Center (SOC), will continue to be blocked from entering and exiting the NASA email system. Refer to Attachment Types Blocked by Microsoft Defender<https://esd.nasa.gov/esdportal?id=kb_article&sysparm_article=KB0016392> for a list of blocked attachment types.
In addition, the Safe Attachments feature of Microsoft Defender will scan all incoming and outgoing messages from NASA and non-NASA email addresses to determine the reputation of the message and any files that might be attached.
* If the message and file attachment are safe: The message and attachment will be delivered to your Inbox.
* If the message and file attachment are unsafe: The message and all attachments will be blocked, even if only one of several attachments is determined to be unsafe. Neither you nor the sender will be notified that the message and attachments were blocked.
* If the message is safe but a file attachment is unsafe: The message will be delivered to your Inbox with a .txt file attached notifying you that the original attachment from the sender was blocked and why (see example below). The sender will not be notified that the attachment was blocked.

Safe Links
To proactively protect you from phishing and targeted attacks, Microsoft Defender will scan all incoming messages from NASA and non-NASA email addresses and rewrite any links (URLs) in the messages.
For instance, if you receive an email message with a link to msnbc.com, when you hover over the link, the first part of the rewritten link will contain “safelinks.protection.outlook.com.” The links will remain rewritten, even if the message is forwarded or replied to.
When you click a link in an email, if the website is safe, you will be automatically redirected to it. If the website is unsafe, the browser will block access to the website and will display a notification similar to the below to let you know the website has been blocked.

Spam Filtering
You will no longer receive End User Digest messages about spam messages that were blocked from your Inbox. Instead, spam messages will now appear in your Junk Email folder. If you have turned off junk email filtering, spam messages will appear in your Inbox. Refer to Using the Junk Folder in Outlook (KB0019462)<https://esd.nasa.gov/nav_to.do?uri=%2Fkb_view.do%3Fsysparm_article%3DKB0019462> for instructions to manage your Junk Email folder settings.
Additional Information
The “[EXTERNAL]” tag will continue to appear in the subject line of messages sent from non-NASA email addresses to help you identify potential phishing messages.
Although Microsoft Defender will help protect you from malicious attachments and websites, please continue to use caution and adhere to the guidelines in the NASA security training when choosing whether or not to read a spam message, open an attachment or click a link.
NASA’s annual cybersecurity training will be updated with details about the features of Microsoft Defender once the solution is available.
