Subject: Re: [All] Back in the saddle - Helpful Key Combos

Good morning team,

I don’t know what resolved things for Marilyn today, but while we are on the subject, here are two critical key combinations to keep on hand at home in case your usually-functional laptop is seemingly not booting up. Trying one or both of them is a common resolution to that somewhat common scenario.

NVRAM Reset<https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063>

[Option key][plus][Command key][plus][P key][plus][R key]
Shut down your Mac (if it’s not off already), then turn it on and immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, and R. You can release the keys after about 20 seconds, during which your Mac might appear to restart.
On Mac computers that play a startup sound<https://support.apple.com/kb/HT202768>, you can release the keys after the second startup sound.
On Mac computers that have the Apple T2 Security Chip<https://support.apple.com/kb/HT208862>, you can release the keys after the Apple logo appears and disappears for the second time.

SMC Reset<https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295>
How you do this depends on what computer type you have.
Brad, Sommer, Caitlin, Susan, Katie, Leslie, Judy, Stevie – your system should have an Apple T2 Security Chip
Erin Czech, Ayuta, Vidal, Jhony, Marilyn, Quincy, Erin Justice, Bernie, Katja – your system should NOT have an Apple T2 Security Chip; follow the instructions for “notebook computers with a nonremovable battery”
Notebook computers with the T2 chip

Before resetting the SMC, try these steps:
1. Shut down your Mac<https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201150> (if it’s not off already).
2. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then release the button.
3. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn on your Mac.

If the issue persists, follow these steps to reset the SMC:
1. Shut down your Mac.
2. On your built-in keyboard, press and hold all of the following keys. Your Mac might turn on.
· Control [cid:image006.png at 01D61FA7.140EC4C0] on the left side of your keyboard
· Option (Alt) [cid:image007.png at 01D61FA7.140EC4C0] on the left side of your keyboard
· Shift [cid:image008.png at 01D61FA7.140EC4C0] on the right side of your keyboard
3. Keep holding all three keys for 7 seconds, then press and hold the power button as well. If your Mac is on, it will turn off as you hold the keys.

4. Keep holding all four keys for another 7 seconds, then release them.
5. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn on your Mac.

Notebook computers with a nonremovable battery

This applies to all MacBook Air<https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201862> models, as well as MacBook<https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201608> and MacBook Pro<https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201300> models introduced in mid 2009 or later, excluding the MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009).
1. Shut down your Mac<https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201150> (if it’s not off already).
2. On your built-in keyboard, press and hold all of these keys:
· Shift [cid:image008.png at 01D61FA7.140EC4C0] on the left side of your keyboard
· Control [cid:image006.png at 01D61FA7.140EC4C0] on the left side of your keyboard
· Option (Alt) [cid:image007.png at 01D61FA7.140EC4C0] on the left side of your keyboard
3. While holding all three keys, press and hold the power button as well.
[Notebook keyboard with all 4 keys pressed]
4. Keep holding all four keys for 10 seconds.
5. Release all keys, then press the power button to turn on your Mac.

Wow. Lost 2hrs but I’m back in business. Not exactly sure why it wouldn’t reboot but Dan and I tried a couple things and it suddenly woke up.
Yay!!

I was worried but knew I had a current back up. Do you? ☺
