Hello All,
I would like to respond to two aspects of the recent exchanges regarding the Steering Committee monthly Zoom meetings:
1) I think that the Steering Committee discussions should stay at the executive level that is separate from discussions of technical details that require input from people not on the Steering Committee. In other words, the Steering Committee should steer. Technical discussions are important, and they should be encouraged to be initiated among those directly involved in the issue at hand. This certainly applies to the issue of the traps, as Martin notes.
2) The software issue raised by Martin has two aspects. If we are talking about broadening the base of software expertise, such as, for example, having someone other than Peter write a driver for communicating with the new APC UPSs, that is certainly a valid discussion. But the “succession” question of hiring someone to take over the central roles of software design and maintenance now provided by Peter, and of calibration standard scale development and propagation now provided by Chris, is a larger issue that will require order $250K per person year in additional funding for an overlap period of order 2 or 3 years. The Steering Committee can endorse this too, but it is ultimately a matter between the relevant principal investigator and the cognizant funding agency.
Perhaps the Steering Committee should begin its first meeting by deciding what its most effective purview should include. In my view, it should function at an executive advisory level, and not include working on details of the project that require a particular technical expertise, or become involved in the interactions between principal investigators and their funding agencies.
Ray

Hi all,
What do you think about the idea of having 'invites' for selected topics? These would be experts who's involvement and expertise is crucial in the discussions and plans. For example, it sounds bizarre to me to talk about Markes without the involvement of Dickon, so my suggestion would have been to invite him for Agenda item 1.
In a similar matter, I don't think it makes sense to talk about traps in the absence of myself and Dickon. I suggest to move that to the next meeting.
When I look at the agenda, I wouldn't see the need for any other invites (except for perhaps Peter on item 5, new format of archived data).
Martin
