Hi Everyone,
Attached are the flight plans for tomorrow (Aug 8) for Chicago. We will
take off at 11 am ET for a 5.5 - 6 hour flight. We will do a short couple
of rasters low (2000 ft AGL) in Indianapolis with no spirals just descents
and ascents in-route. Then we will head to Chicago for one loop of our
Flight Plan 2 with wind from the Southwest. We will only do one loop
because there are 20% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon tomorrow. We
may ask in flight to stay over the lake on the Eastern Shore of Lake
Michigan instead of on land. We will make this call in flight based on the
latest air quality forecast.
The Chicago flight plan is fully described in these slides (

on slide 16 (Flight plan 2 wind from the Southwest). As requested, I'm
adding a quick altitude vs time plot (these could change depending on what
ATC let's us do, so ask questions to mission scientist in real time
for exact numbers). We will generally be 1500 to 2000 ft AGL over land and
we are going to request 500 - 1000 ft over water. More information is in
the Grid table.
Some people mentioned that they wanted to see what the mission scientist
and the ground weather support were discussing during the flight, so we
have created another xchat channel called #dc8_weather. This is for the
mission scientist to chat down to the ground support for potential changes
to the flight plan based on weather. You all are welcome to see what we are
chatting about, but limit your questions and responses in this channel, so
that we can use this channel to make quick decisions during the flight.
Thanks,
Becky
