Theory Investigation: Forecasts of mountain wave vertical displacement amplitudes, temperature amplitudes and turbulence production will be provided at reference pressure levels in the troposphere and stratosphere during SOLVE, using the Naval Research Laboratory Mountain Wave Forecast Model (MWFM) interfaced to forecast winds and temperatures within the SOLVE area of operations.

Local turbulence forecasts in the deployment region will be made available to ER-2 flight planners on a daily basis. Forecasts and post-analyses of mesoscale temperature perturbations produced throughout the Arctic stratosphere will be provided for global chemical trajectory calculations. Results from a next generation ray-based extension to the MWFM will also be made available during SOLVE, in addition to the basic operational model used in previous missions.
