Purpose of Flight:Science
Comments:The DC-8 sampled emissions & contrails behind an A320 burning reference fuel #3 (Clean Jet A). Successful flight. Obtained sampling data at 26kft (M0.72 & 0.80), 32kt (M0.76 & M0.80), 38kft (M0.76 & 0.80). Most of day, contrail from ATRA did not persist until the DC-8. "Bread crumb trail" predicting contrail location worked very well for finding contrails. We completed ground emissions tests on the taxiway at 1160kg/hr and 1260 kg/hr, and Idle. Aircraft returned in good condition. Science instruments had a great flight except DLR CHEMEX pump did not work well at 38kft.
