Purpose of Flight:Science
Comments:Sampling flight test technique developmen. We had an electrical problem prior to takeoff which required us to shut down all science instruments in order to recover. Once fixed, the DC-8 took off and flew in coordination with the DLR A320 as the lead aircraft burning "dirty" Jet A fuel. We were approved to use a temporary restricted airspace over Northeast Germany. At Mach 0.72 and 26kft and with well established contrails from the A320, we did 3 test runs in the midfield sampling the secondary wake and 4 runs in the farfield sampling the primary wake. We then did a number of runs at 32kft and Mach 0.8 with no A320 contrails at the sampling distance of the DC-8. The science instruments did very well and it was a successful mission. The aircraft returned in good shape.
