Dear Colleague,

Preparations for the 1997 Photochemistry of Ozone Loss in the Arctic Region In Summer (POLARIS) aircraft campaign are underway. To that end, I am working with the Fountainhead hotel chain in Fairbanks, AK to set up room blocks for the three deployments. We are negotiating for a block of rooms at Sophie Station and Wedgewood Resort for the April/May and September deployments, and at Wedgewood Resort for the June/July deployment. Both facilities include two-room suites with a kitchen and an on-site laundry, and are conveniently located with respect to Fort Wainwright and area restaurants. Rooms will be available at or below per diem rates, tax inclusive. This is a significant discount over prevailing rates, especially in the June/July time frame. Because the June/July deployment occurs during the high tourist season, negotiations with the hotel involve some very strict terms, including release date and minimum occupancy. Therefore, it is especially critical that we reserve a group of rooms well in advance and define as precisely as possible the number of rooms required.

While the POLARIS Science Team is yet to be defined, we are asking the potential POLARIS community to provide information regarding their travel plans . Specifically, **if** you are selected to participate in POLARIS, how many sleeping rooms do you anticipate that your team will need for each deployment? And will your team take advantage of the room blocks that are established or will they find lodging at another location?

Please understand that this message does not construe an intent at this time to fund your effort under POLARIS. It merely is our attempt to obtain an accurate estimate of team size and also the intent within the community to utilize the proposed room blocks.
