Hi everyone,

We had to make a slight correction to the Field Report for May 5. Rev 1 of this report is attached.

And since I am here, I may as well also report that we have two aircraft in the air right now (AFRC B200 picture below) and it’s looking like it’s going to be a good day!

Subject: Science Report for May 5 and Field Update

Hello everyone,

A quick update on S-MODE:

May 5 marked the science team’s first attempt at joint data collection with four instruments: DopplerScatt (JPL) and MOSES (UCLA) on the AFRC B200, a wave glider (WHOI), and the newcomer MASS instrument from the UCSD Scripps Institution of Oceanography installed on a Twin Otter (operated by Twin Otter Int’l). Unfortunately, the weather was not as cooperative as on Monday and while good data was collected from DopplerScatt, the flights were cut short after a few hours due to low cloud cover that prevented visibility to the ocean surface for the MOSES and MASS optical instruments.

Please take a look at Ernesto Rodriguez’ attached field report for more details on the science, including some quick look DopplerScatt data from the May 3 flight.

As for today, the team will again attempt a joint data collection with DopplerScatt, MOSES, and MASS — this time farther offshore over an Office of Naval Research experiment site. Nominal takeoff times for the B200 and Twin Otter are 1pm PT and 1230 PT respectively.
