Hello PACE-PAX team,

Some good news: we have been given additional flight hours for the purpose of validating EarthCARE observations in addition to those of PACE. Specifically, we will have an additional 24 flight hours available for the ER-2, to add to the original 60. There is no planned change to the flight hours or schedule of the other components of the mission.

We will not extend the duration of the ER-2 component of PACE-PAX. However, ER-2 check flights are currently scheduled for Aug. 26-29 – should we finish early we may attempt a science flight on those days. Otherwise, we will continue to operate in our previously scheduled Sept. 3-27th window. We may need to fly on RDO’s and weekends, and we are working on the details of that with the ER-2 and AFRC team.

We plan to fly the ER-2 under EarthCARE at least once, with a goal of three or more coordinated sets of observations. We will augment our Validation Traceability Matrix (VTM) to accommodate this and with input from the EarthCARE validation team. EarthCARE will overfly the PACE-PAX region roughly two hours after PACE, which I think means that we can perform under passes of both spacecraft on the same flight if conditions are right. We will also likely accomplish PACE VTM objectives when flying under EarthCARE. Furthermore, PACE validation efforts will have access to observations during the PERCUSSION and MAESTRO EarthCARE validation campaigns which will be happening at roughly the same time as PACE-PAX in the Atlantic Ocean.

In the near future I hope to bring members of the EarthCARE validation team to our meetings to discuss more. The EarthCARE launch date is at the end of May, so these are exciting times.

In the meantime, please take this into consideration as you plan your PACE-PAX registration, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or concerns. And should you see Jack Kaye or Laura Lorenzoni at NASA HQ, thank them for their support.

Best regards
Kirk, Brian, Ivona, Sommer and Judy
