Walter,
Today being a holiday, getting some of the info you request (that I don't have) is unlikely. When I asked about the SAR POC, I was told that all and every SAR coordination gets made via PUQ ATC, so there is no direct number for you (us) to call directly (might want to touch base with them once you get here).

Patricio is doing mostly ESPO support when I’m not in PUQ, he assist with some of the translation and other housekeeping tasks, he has nothing to do with weather forecasts or anything operational. Having said that, he will be available to go to forecasts should any further assistance be needed when communicating with the met office.

As for weather briefs, according to their rules, PUQ meteorology cannot give us forecasts for flights over Antarctica because it is out of their jurisdiction, so we must follow this process:

  * We email points of interest for the potential target areas to the Frei meteorological station in Antarctica (meteofrei at dgac.gob.cl<mailto:meteofrei at dgac.gob.cl>) the day before the flight and we receive the forecast usually an hour or two before the flight (see attached sample). Then PUQ meteorology interprets/reads the forecast for us.
  * The Frei met station does require us to provide them feedback about the accuracy of their observations, a few lines and pictures if available. We send this out with the request for the next flight day.

I have attached my most updated contact lists for Chile, some might be outdated, but if it is, I havent had to deal with them during this deployment (I’m currently in Punta Arenas, I just sent off the DC-8 to Ascension Island several hours ago).

I will be back here for the first phase of OIB.

Regards,

Jhony

Subject: Flight plan filing in Punta Arenas

Hey Jhony

Hope you are well. Can you send me a copy of the recent Flight plan required at Punta Arenas? Any electronic version should work (fillable preferred). I can create a fillable version or try too.

Also the phone and emails for Patricio, the weather folks and others you deem important for getting weather and plans into the system.

Question as to the Commander of the SAR and Air Force Wing commander. We had a good friend in there a few weeks back and I imagine he has moved on.

I have the DAO at the embassy, turns out to be Dawn Hokaj (NAV) brother in law or some kinfolk.

Col J.J. Hokaj email: hokajjj at state.gov<mailto:hokajjj at state.gov>, office #: 56 9 2 2330 3391.

Thanks for all the work!!

Gracias

Jhony,

Please be sure to copy Wayne and Walt on all such email. Wayne is the Project Pilot and Walt is the OIB project Nav. They will see that important information gets sent to the flight crews.

Flight plans and manifests in advance are not a problem so long as we know what science wants in a timely manner.

Thanks,
Chris

Hello Tim,

Patricio will not be supporting us for ATOM, he will be there for OIB. The flight plans get filed in the operations room (directly below where we will be located. Closer to the date you could email it to me and I will print it and bring it to them upon my arrival (I will be there on August 9th).

They need the flight plan not less than 30 minutes before take-off (and up to 120 hours before). It can be submitted in person or via email (although since they check the email sporadically, a phone call would be a good idea.) It must include a passenger manifest. Their email address is: aro.arenas at dgac.gov.cl<mailto:aro.arenas at dgac.gov.cl> and their phone numbers are: +56 61 2 745-417 and +56 61 2 745-421. I will be sending out a contact list in the next few moments.

Hi Jhonny … will Patricio be supporting us when we are in Punta for ATom? One area of interest is filing the flight plan for our trip to Ascension. I’ve attached what we think is the form needed to file the flight plan. On OIB, I kind of remember the pilots going downstairs to an office area to file the flight plan and I think with Patricio helping on occasion? Anyway, do you have any insight into what our Navigator, Todd Renfro, needs to do to file the flight plan?

Thanks,
Tim
