Friends of MIRA,

Our next Morphing MIRA webinar is in one week (Monday, September 25, 14 GMT). Nick Schutgens will present How representative are observations? Spatio-temporal issues when using observations. (see abstract and bio below). If you ‘accepted’ the Teams invitation last week, you should see a reminder ~15 minutes before the presentation. You can also click this link to join the meeting when the time comes:

Nick will speak for ~25 minutes, followed by a Q&A period. Nick’s recorded presentation and slides will be posted online with the other MIRA webinars at https://science-data.larc.nasa.gov/MIRA-WG/Morphing-MIRA-Webinar-Series/ sometime later (we have to verify copyright compliance before posting on NASA webpages).

We (the MIRA steering committee) would also like to try something new this time. After discussing Nick’s presentation, we would like to reserve 10-15 minutes for a roundtable discussion. The theme of the discussion is What is MIRA, and what can it do for me? I will explain more at the beginning of the discussion, but our purpose is to get feedback from the community through a medium that is more personal than something like Google forms. I am a little uncomfortable attempting a roundtable in a virtual format because there is no way for anyone to ‘read the room’ in such environments, but let’s give it a try and see how it goes!

Thanks,
Greg Schuster

How representative are observations? Spatio-temporal issues when using observations.
Dr. Nick Schutgens
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (The Netherlands)

Observations are considered the lifeblood of science: they are the closest we can come to knowing the truth. But are they fit for purpose? Each observation, whether a satellite pixel or an in-situ measurement, only represents a small spatio-temporal domain. When using these observations we often implicitly assume they are representative of a much larger spatio-temporal domain. This is particularly the case when evaluating global models but also occurs when comparing two observations (e.g. evaluation of a satellite product). The ‘errors’ introduced by this assumption can be substantial and are often comparable, if not larger, than measurement/retrieval uncertainties. I will discuss attempts to estimate such representation errors, and discuss ways to reduce them.

Biography

Dr. Schutgens has a PhD in astrophysics (Utrecht University, the Netherlands) but has since worked in atmospheric science. First on satellite retrievals of trace gases and clouds (KNMI, the Netherlands and NICT, Japan) and later on aerosol data assimilation and model evaluation (University of Tokyo, Japan and University of Oxford, England). Since 2022, Dr. Schutgens has been an assistant professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (The Netherlands) where he uses (satellite) observations to improve aerosol models.
