Friends of MIRA,
There are less than four weeks until AGU abstracts are due. Here are two sessions that may be of interest to those on this list. Send me your session descriptions and I will be happy to add them to this list. Please feel free to forward to colleagues so that they can join MIRA at https://espo.nasa.gov/lists/listinfo/mira. Next update is Thursday, July 15.
Thanks,
Greg Schuster

There is a natural partitioning of scientific interest amongst three specialties of aerosol research: modeling, in situ measurements, and remote sensing. The community sees enhanced measurement capabilities when these groups interact, and this strengthens the overall scientific impact on climate and air quality. The MIRA international working group is a forum for identifying collaborations and improving discussions amongst specialties and across regional boundaries, with the goal of creating new projects and enhancing existing projects. MIRA emphasizes areas of study where the aerosol specialties overlap, and ideal MIRA projects seek additional data from others (observed and modeled). Indeed, many of us are already working across multiple aerosol disciplines, and our work could benefit from additional access to different datasets and areas of expertise. We seek presentations that showcase interdisciplinary work and scientists who are interested in the MIRA concept. More information about MIRA can be found at https://science.larc.nasa.gov/mira-wg/.

Light-absorbing carbon aerosols (LACs) such as black or brown carbon are important climate warming agents in the earth system. LAC impacts manifest in the Earth’s atmosphere, on land, and in hydrologic systems. For example, either airborne or snow-deposited LAC absorbs solar energy and alters the Earth’s radiative budget. However, the LAC radiative effect in climate models varies by more than a factor of two. Uncertainties arise in large part from the physical and chemical transformations of LAC in the atmosphere during its lifecycle affecting the corresponding treatment in models. Making scientific progress on LAC is critical for winning the battle against the global warming. This session invites submissions on: characterization of LAC emissions, transformations, and sinks; measurements on LAC chemical, microphysical, and optical properties; numerical simulations of LAC and its properties at various scales; assessment of LAC radiative forcing and climate impacts.
