Hi everyone,

The wi-fi password in Thule for the ESPO wireless network will be:

GV-IceSat-2!

I haven’t yet received confirmation that this password change went into effect but I will confirm with a phone call tomorrow. It may help too if I could get a volunteer from the group arriving tomorrow to check with the communications group. They are located at “Top Hill”.

Thank you,

Erin Czech

Hi everyone,

Since we are one week away from the GV transit, I thought it would be a good time to send out this email out again. If you are traveling to Thule and haven’t read the notes below and the attached informational documents, please do so.

One thing I did want to reemphasize are the documents you will absolutely need to have on hand when boarding the rotator flight at BWI. If you are transiting on the GV, you will only need items 3-5.

  1. Flight booking document
  2. Letter of Authorization (LOA)
  3. Passport
  4. COVID vaccination record
  5. Documentation containing proof that either a) you tested negative for COVID within 48 hours of your departure to Thule or b) you have recovered from COVID within the past 90 days

Thank you,

P.S. In case you are interested, I found the following link as a footnote to the base’s traveler guide. Enjoy!

Subject: [Icesat-2] [IMPORTANT] Information regarding travel to Thule Air Base

Hi everyone,

I have attached two important resources for all travelers to Thule AB. I have pulled out a few of the most salient points for the list below (and also added a few of my own), but people should carefully read both documents, print them out, or otherwise store them on a device prior to commencing travel:

  * All travelers originating from outside of Greenland (aircrew and passengers) require a negative COVID pre-test (any type) within 48 hours of departure to Thule Air Base. Taking a picture of a home test will not be sufficient. You will need documentation with a time stamp.
  * All travelers will attest to their vaccination status upon arrival. Personnel should be prepared to present documented proof of vaccination status (as applicable) for immediate inspection.
  * CDC does not recommend retesting for COVID-19 for at least 90 days after a positive test, therefore retesting is not required in these cases. Recovered travelers must ensure they possess documentation proving they have previously tested positive with COVID-19 in the previous 90 days.
  * For those taking a rotator flight, you will be required to show your flight booking and Letter of Authorization (LOA) or DD1610 to the AMC Desk at BWI when checking-in. Another copy of the ticket and LOA are required at gate check in Thule. Print three copies of each travel document.
  * Payment is required when checking-in at the North Star Inn. Major credit cards are accepted but require a PIN.
  * Upon check-in, guests will be given a meal card to use at the base’s dining hall. There is a machine by the front desk and the dining hall that guests can use to put funds in the card.
  * There are NO ATMs on base. Visa and MasterCard are accepted at all points of sale. American Express is NOT accepted. It may be a good idea to bring some USD cash in case POS networks are down at any given time.
  * The ESPO wi-fi network will be available for all personnel at the following locations on base: 100 (North Star Inn), 107 (Dining Hall), 236 (TOW Club), 362 (Community Center), 608 (Base Gym), 619 (Airport Terminal), 623 (Hangar 7) and 624 (Hangar 8). We will be providing the password for this network at a later point. The maximum speed we could request for this network was 2 MB/sec and only a 100 GB data allowance. Expect the network to be slow and high bandwidth activities perhaps impossible (e.g., large data transfers). Please do not use this network to stream Netflix, Hulu, etc. We do not enough available data to support this and, frankly, it would probably be a pretty frustrating experience anyway given the slow speed.

If you have any questions, please feel free to follow up with me.
