To everyone using the CARE cloud indicator product
============================================
Dear all,
we updated the CARE cloud indicator product which distinguishes between
periods inside and outside of clouds as well as cloud phase (liquid cloud,
ice cloud, cloud in the mixed-phase temperature regime, and aerosol cloud
transition regime).
Our "old" cloud flag misclassified many fire plumes as clouds since these
fire plumes have so many large particles. After discussing these issues,
checking data and testing different additional criteria, we found a rather
universal additional parameter (a ratio between integral number
concentration of particles larger and smaller 5 µm diameter) which works for
ATom and FIREX and can also distinguish between strong fire plumes and
clouds. This is now implemented in the code and the new FIREX cloud
indicator data were uploaded today.
Please only use the new version of the cloud indicator product uploaded
today (6 March 2020).
Let us know if there are any questions.
Best wishes,
Bernadett, Max and Manuel
