Hi Guys,
This sounds great. One thing. Please do not over interpret the “schedule” for the Survey Ship in this year’s plan of the moment. The Survey Ship’s operations is to be built from a set of modules (core, spokes, survey, edge, etc.) that will be configured based upon locations of assets and features and the conditions in the field. What was there was an estimate so we could figure out sampling budgets for water and supplies.

My postdoc Sarah is working with it right now to estimate time we would need for each cast/tow. The towing can happen on our way to or way off the process site and we've currently planned majority of the experiments requiring towing on days the survey ship would be in motion. If we need to tow on a day the survey ship needs to remain near the process center, we can combine that with the passage out to the poop run as we were doing on the Revelle.

If Mark stays on the process ship it leaves us without some critical contextual information on our experiments and very short handed on sampling days when we need part of our team in the TMC clean area. I am very reluctant to have our team split.

We can resolve the other more logistical issues below once we decide on these two factors.

I do see your points below and agree that it would be optimal if we can keep you all together. To do so, will mean that we will need to eliminate one berth from one group on the Survey Ship. We will start thinking about how to do that shortly. It is possible as we have added 1 to the Hydro team operation, 1 for the UCTD and 1 to Collin’s group compared with the Ride operations.

The plan of the moment would have the Survey Ship at the “core" (within 10 km of the Process Ship) roughly 1/2 the time during an epoch (while traps are in the water and maybe two times more times). It seems that doing the TMC casts during the noon time makes the most sense and you would optimize these based upon whether we are at the “core”. I need more detail on the other needs Bethany and Kristen have for their sampling. The TMC tow fish seems straight forward (especially with a better pump) although I agree with you that early morning TMC rosette casts may be challenging.

Moving the trap group is the only other viable alternative, but if they really need to pull traps on three staggered days (which I don't really understand) then the mission of the Survey ship is crippled. That won't work. The idea of removing a person from each of 5 groups is equally impactful as everyone is already short handed and 5 groups will be crippled. So moving us, as undesirable as it is, is the least harmful choice to the overall program. Everyone owes us beers.

The trade offs are these: My rate measurements are well aligned with the 14C work by James and the 15N work by Adrian. In fact I was originally funded to do 14C, 15N and 32Si work all myself, but I eliminated my 14C and 15N to reduce redundancy and berths. So it is a positive to keep these measurements together. The negative aspect of me staying on the Process ship is that I lose access to TM clean water (Fe limitation occurs in the lower euphotic zone in the N Atl), but more importantly it creates a huge labor shortage when the Jenkin's group sets up and breaks down experiments on the Survey ship. We did 6 experiments, each with a significant (half day or so) set up and tear down period. So we'd need a person to work with us 12 half days out of 24 cruise days (3 eight-day epochs). We just don't see where any other group on the Survey ship can give us that much time, especially considering that the Survey ship folks are giving up berths to accommodate those that move over. The bottom line is if I don't move with the group everything the Jenkin's group is doing outside of rate measurements is highly compromised. So unless you see a way to provide the Jenkin's group with what is essentially a half time person we think that all of us need to move together.

All light levels will be cooled with surface seawater with none chilled with mechanical chillers like on the process ship, but that's a sacrifice that will need to be made. These would be in addition to Bethany's two large incubators

A significant number of pre-dawn casts in the core seem very difficult if not impossible on the Survey ship. The main reason for pre dawn casts for 24 h rates is the ease of keeping dark-adapted cells out of bright light. I can adjust using opaque coolers and black garbage bags as light shields for incubation bottles. Seems there are 4 opportunities per epoch for noonish sampling of the core. Realizing three of those per epoch for rates (shallow, 100m ish, TM cast) would be ideal.
