> Hey Dave, I just wanted to send you some information regarding the required items for sailing on the Discovery. I've gotten some EXPORTS people asking me about it if you'd like to forward the info.

> NMF (the UK’s National Marine Facilities) requires shipboard scientists to have the ENG1 medical and Personal Survival Training (PST).
>
> If your in the UK, it is probably easiest to get it there.
> This website lists the doctors who can perform the ENG1 outside of the UK:

> There is one doctor in the U.S. in Fort Lauderdale, FL (not very convenient).

> Luckily, they accept the Norwegian Seafarer’s Medical exam, and that is more readily obtainable in the US:

> The closest one to SB is in San Pedro but there are others in Seattle for example. It is around $500 (about 300 for bloodwork and 200 for the exam). However the lab doing the bloodwork may accept your insurance. The exam consisted of testing sight, hearing, reviewing vaccinations, etc. It took about an hour. They mail the final paperwork to you. I would recommend scheduling appointments earlier than expected because they don't seem to have many appointments when they booked me.

> The other part is the Personnal Survival training. Here is what the folks at NMF told me:
>
> PST courses should be readily available, one example is https://mitags-pmi.org/courses/view/Personal_Survival_Techniques#courseDates <https://mitags-pmi.org/courses/view/Personal_Survival_Techniques#courseDates>

> The important thing to note is that it should be STCW2010 compliant. I did this one in the U.K so I can't say what's the best option for the U.S.
