[Exports_project_office] OOI glider

Hi All,
Couple things. First, I’m broadcasting this to the PO email list so all decision makers are aware (as we have agreed to). Second, I am totally fine with us helping out the OOI in this way. Our goal as a project has been to try to maximize the opportunities in front of us via collaboration. This one seems like its a no brainer given there will be very little impact on our field work plans. Last, I am unclear (even reading thru the emails below) if the OOI team deployed a Slocum glider during their turnaround cruise on the Sally Ride (which likes its just ending - https://oceancolor.gsfc.nasa.gov/fileshare/ivona_cetinic/platformPositions_pic.png). Roo, can you please update us as to the OOI glider status?
Best, Dave

>>
>> Our request would be to deploy the glider in the vicinity of the OOI Papa array on a timeline determined by convenience. There are minimal post-deployment activities conducted by the vessel. Normally, we'd require the vessel to get a CTD cast within ~ 1km of the deployment location. In this case, perhaps the launch can be coordinated with another planned cast. Alternatively the glider is deployed near the the OOI profiler mooring. Launch activities would require the vessel to stop & hold station to establish satellite comms to shore. We'd need a way to communicate to confirm readiness to launch and completion of the launch. To facilitate the launch we can provide a launch cart and instructions (a cart is already aboard the Ride now).
>>
>> I believe your departure dates are Aug 9th? We can provide documentation needed for the manifest, hazmat, weights, dimensions, etc. We'd need a contact to receive the case in Seattle. I would like to send a tech to Seattle for a day to run some tests on the vehicle after shipping, and hand-off information, demonstrate the cart, etc, as needed.
>>
>> I realize that the timeline to get the glider to Seattle and into your hands is very short. I have no wish to introduce more complications for you just prior to a long cruise, so I understand if this request comes too late to be acted on.

What is the tasking going to be for this glider? Can we have some input on that? I don’t have Craig and Eric ‘s email on my phone but we should bring them into the conversation.

He’s understanding that it may not be able to fit into the schedule at this point, but it would be nice to have an additional glider out there. Another thought I had is if there would be an opportunity to deploy the OOI glider from Eric’s recovery cruise in December.

I might be able to get it shipped out to Seattle in time to meet the Ride. We've got our launch cart on the Ride now. But we'd need to arrange with someone to deploy it for us."
