Hiya

yep we are set to go.
This is the procedure:

If asked to collect additional water/sample/measurement by the scientist outside of the EXPORTS armada:

Contact the Chief Sci to see if it is feasible – collection of the add-ons should not jeopardize the science of exports
Together with Chief Sci and Project office decide who is the EXPORTS PI that outside scientist needs to work with
Together with Chief Sci and Project office and Pis evaluate if that collection will have detrimental effect on funded Science of EXPORTS (especially student projects)
If all these check have been done, and that sample has been cleared to go then:

Hi Deb,

My water requirements are small (~30 mL) and I don’t need water from every cast. I’m mainly looking to characterize where the surface waters came from via the nitrate isotopes. This has allowed me to construct a budget for N and Fe (Rafter et al. 2017 in Nature Com) as well as estimate new primary production (In Prep). I see these measurements as being highly complementary to the EXPORTS mission.

The bottles will be in one or two small boxes (depending on the number of stations you’ll have).

Best,

Patrick

Patrick,

It could work out. I would point you to the Chief Scientists on the cruise, Deb Steinberg, who will oversee the overall water budget. Copied Deb here.

Best,

Mark

Hi Mark,

It was great to briefly talk with you at Ocean Sciences last week.

I wanted to check back with you about getting small samples (~30 mL) for nitrate isotopes during the upcoming EXPORTS cruise to station P. I hope this small amount of water won't be a problem. (I’m also happy to get the dregs of each bottle.)

My plans are to use these nitrate isotopes to identify the subsurface characteristics of waters delivered to the surface. This is a new technique I’ve been developing (see attached paper) and should be quite useful for quantifying the upwelling-to-export cycle. The attached paper uses this technique to quantify the internal and external flux of nitrate and iron to the eastern equatorial Pacific. It is this paper and follow-up work that I hope to discuss with you in the next few weeks.

How many unique stations will be occupied on this cruise? If you will be sampling one station repeatedly, I’ll just send one box of a couple dozen bottles.

Best,

Patrick

Hi again Mark,

I have plans to come back up to UCSB sometime this week—tomorrow or Friday. You around and/or have time to talk? Should take too long.

best,

Patrick

Will you be around next Wednesday (day before Thanksgiving)? I’ll be back up to spend the holiday with some friends in Ventura.

Otherwise, I’ll give you a call.

Patrick,

Sorry I'll be on travel on Friday and won't be in Santa Barbara. Maybe we can chat by phone another time.

Hi Mark,

I’ll be around the UCSB neighborhood this Friday and had a couple questions about your 2008 and 2011 papers on the equatorial Pacific. Do you have any time (preferably later in the day) to talk with me about these great papers?

Best,

Patrick

Hi Mark,

Assuming these samples were filtered they may be fine for nitrate isotopes. Fingers crossed, this could make for a great paper.

Can I stop by UCSB next week to pick them up? I want to measure them ASAP.

Best,

Patrick

Good to hear from you. We might have some water left over form our d30Si work there, but it will have sat at room temperature for a decade.

Hi Mark,

Sorry to bother you with a (possibly impossible) request, but I’m looking for samples from the first of the EqPac Biocomplexity cruises to measure nitrate isotopes (EB04).

This is in support of the work I presented at UCSB a few months back about quantifying nitrate assimilation at 110W. In short, the observed nitrate drawdown was much higher than the available iron can explain. I based this on dissolved iron measurements from the 1st Biocomplexity cruise (by Kaupp and Measures), which were a few months before some of my own measurements.

It would make sense to measure the nitrate isotopes if there were samples available. I only need a small amount (perhaps 10 mL) and frozen would be preferred, although if they are filtered they may be alright. Acidified also would be ok for N isotopes (based on past work).

Hope all is well,

Patrick
