Hi team,

As we proceed closer to the campaign and we get our travel schedules to Cabo Verde in order, we’re now looking to make sure we have an accurate list of each team members’ anticipated roles in the field program. We have a few key roles that need to be filled while we’re in the field, and are listed below. Once we have our participant list for the roles below, we’ll be evaluating the in-field coverage of each role to make sure we have enough people each day to support end-to-end operations from forecasting to on-ground and in-flight mission support..

Ed N, Amin, and I are looking to create a list of participants in 3 primary areas of responsibility. Those on the team who are interested in participating as one or more of the following should email us and let us know of their interest…


  *   Mission Scientists — this role supports developing flight plans in support of a single or multiple science objectives for a given flight. Mission Scientists will also coordinate with the larger science team to provide ground support to the onboard Flight Scientists with real-time flight monitoring and decision-making in support of the science and flight objectives (e.g. monitoring satellite imagery, dropsonde coordination, handling communications between aircraft and ground support team).


  *   Flight Scientists — a subset of Mission Scientists who are willing to fly on the DC-8 and will lead the science effort by maintaining contact with ground Mission Scientists, coordinate flight pattern changes with the DC-8 crew in flight, work with the instrument teams to facilitate quality data collection, interpretation of downlinked data and real time images, and ensure flight science objectives are met. They will be responsible for leading the preparation of the Flight Mission Report, with help from the ground Mission Scientists and Forecasters.


  *   Dropsonde Processors — these will be trained (which will be provided) individuals who will process each dropsonde — while the DC-8 is in flight — through the NCAR Aspen QC software. They will then send the processed dropsonde data to the GTS so that it can be assimilated into the global models.

In the spirit of our emphasis on expanding early career scientist participation, we invite any student, postdoc, or really any participant for that matter (including our forecasters), who is interested in learning any of these roles above to send their interest along as well —no previous experience required.

In summary, if you’re interested in participating in any of the 3 roles above, whether you have experience or not, let Ed N, Amin, and I know by replying to this email. If you can let us by July 15th, then we can share an updated list at the Science Team Meeting.
