Good afternoon-

Today was a very productive no-fly work day here at the hangar.

Teams on site included:

Wing Probes- had a fantastic day after the frustrations of yesterday’s ICF. They now have 8 out of 9 instruments up and running- there’s still an issue with the PPS, but they have the parts they need to fix it on order for arrival on Monday so they should have all of them working in time for ICF#2 next week.

A-ATOFMS- still troubleshooting, but they think the issue is with the switch from ground to aircraft power. The instrument did start working ~30 minutes into the flight and actually collected some data, so the team is extremely happy!

SSFR- was successful with one connection but still working another and will need access to the top of the plane on Monday, but overall a very successful day

GVR- no report, PI left early to catch her flight home and I didn’t get a chance to talk to her

FIMS- things are going very well, Jian was able to do all the calibrations he needed to do so everything is working and he’s happy

MARLi/ADL- still troubleshooting ways to make ADL work better

Significant progress is also being made on the cargo shipments:

Stevie and Quincy worked with our Load Master, Kit, all day building up pallets for the cargo run on Tuesday
Our pile of luggage continues to grow! If you don’t see your bag don’t panic- some are buried and anything that arrived on Friday won’t make it over here until Monday
Spare propeller is ready to go

Thank you to Eric, Kit, Stevie, and Quincy for being here on a Saturday to support us and ARCSIX in general!

Tomorrow (Sunday 19 May) is a down day- there will be no access to the hangar or the plane, so enjoy your day off and we’ll see everyone on Monday.

Thank you!

Kelly

ARCSIX Team-

Friday was a crazy day of sliding review times and schedule delays, but all things considered it was a great day!

My team and I presented ARCSIX to our Center Director at the Approval To Proceed review Friday at lunchtime and received permission to conduct the Instrument Check Flight in the afternoon. They took off at 1510 and landed at 1700, for a total of 3.8 flight hours.

Comments from Pilots:
Good flight, got a lot out of what they could do given the weather

Notes from Flight Scientist Luke Ziemba:
Good first flight to get in the air and work out issues. It was a long but ultimately productive day to start ARCSIX! Cloudiness over WFF restricted our flight operations to work over the ocean, but able to accomplish many of our calibration and shake-out objectives. This included TAMMS-winds maneuvers at 2 altitudes, PUTLS inlet flow calibrations at 2 altitudes, a box orbit and descending box spiral, in-cloud sampling with CVI/microphysics, in-situ leak checking, MARLi above-cloud stacked legs, and a bonus LVIS-alignment in a small patch of clear air just off the coast. We were also able to shake out important air-to-ground data transmission issues.

Notes from the instrument operators:

A-ATOFMS/MPS (Andrew Holen):
May have a grounding issue, will work Saturday with Eric to troubleshoot and try to resolve. Would like 2 seats on ICF#2, if possible

ADL/MARLi (Zhien Wang): need time, second flight
Had some issues, will be onsite to troubleshoot Saturday. Would like to fly on ICF#2

SSFR/All-sky/SPN-S (Arabella Chamberlain):
Overall pretty okay, still need to do some troubleshooting. Would like 2 seats on ICF#2 if possible

CFDC/Aerosol Concentrator (Kevin Barry):
Everything looked good, no weekend work needed. May or may not fly again

DASH-SP (Eva-Lou Edwards):
Good flight, will look at data to evaluate everything

DLH/DLH-SP/Trace Gas (Glenn Diskin):
Thinks everything is good, may still want to fly ICF#2

FIMS/STAC (Jian Wang):
Mostly okay, need to do a flow calibration Saturday but won’t fly second flight

GVR (Paquita Zuidema):
Will be onsite the first part of Saturday to work electrical issues with Eric

LARGE ( Luke Ziemba/Michael Shook): no weekend, will be on 2nd flight
Will not be working the weekend but will fly ICF#2

PUTLS (Matt Brown)
No instrument failures but will be here Saturday to work, would like to fly ICF#2

LVIS (Dave Rabine/Albert Wu):
Weather not conducive to collecting the data they’re looking for but did get one alignment done. Will definitely be on ICF#2 when there’s clear weather

RSP (Andrzej Wasilewski):
No issues from RSP. Will operate on next test flight but do not need a seat.

TAMMS (Lee Thornhill):
                Everything worked fine, no issues

Wing Probes (Azusa Takeishi): 4 out of 7 working, need Saturday and second test flight
4 out of 7 probes working but significant troubleshooting is needed. Will work Saturday and fly ICF#2

Saturday will be a no-fly work day with aircraft access and power 0830- 1630. Please note that things will start to shut down around 1615 (4:15pm) so that the mechanics can leave at 1630 (4:30pm)

Thank you!

Kelly
