To follow up on this message, please do not purchase bedding for this deployment. We are exploring options to have the project purchase these and ship them to Pituffik. Also, stand by for more information regarding the C-130 boarding process in Burlington, VT. ESPO is finalizing the details of a hotel room block and transportation from the hotel to the ANG. More to come soon.
Thank you,

Subject: [Arcsix] NASA ARCSIX All hands follow up, Logistics.
Dear all, I hope you're doing well. In our previous all-hands meeting, we briefly covered some logistic topics. Now, let's go into some additional points and reminders that we didn't have a chance to address yesterday. It is a long email; please read it to the end.
Travel
It is important that you review the travel THU sheet here: https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fspreadsheets%2Fd%2F1udy_HILmCs_UNZczUyo5XiXWPVgNvrhui2-s_KOeL8A%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing&data=05%7C02%7Carcsix%40espo.nasa.gov%7C7669385b653d4c3cb7bc08dc5dd2ec29%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C638488407746683913%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=PQHjed9Bt4sFsQCFouXUExB68Cm8FlYc8WH2ha7P8h8%3D&reserved=0<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fspreadsheets%2Fd%2F1udy_HILmCs_UNZczUyo5XiXWPVgNvrhui2-s_KOeL8A%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing&data=05%7C02%7Carcsix%40espo.nasa.gov%7C7669385b653d4c3cb7bc08dc5dd2ec29%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C638488407746683913%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=PQHjed9Bt4sFsQCFouXUExB68Cm8FlYc8WH2ha7P8h8%3D&reserved=0>. If needed, please make edits in the 1st (‘editable’) tab and add notes in the last column of what you changed.
The C-130 flight to Thule on May 24 will stop in Burlington, VT (BTV), to pick up most passengers.
If it is personally convenient to board this flight at WFF, please plan to do so. You will make your travel own travel arrangements. Please don't leave a rental car at WFF for the duration.
If you board at BTV, ESPO will arrange a one-night room block at a nearby hotel from 5/23 to 5/24 (details TBD) and bus transportation to the airport. If you are taking this route, it's essential to ship your large (check-in size, 50 lb.) luggage to WFF by Friday, May 17. This will ensure it is incorporated into the luggage pallet. We will not have time at BTV to load luggage. You can only bring one item, a carry-on size, on board.
On June 17, return flights P-3 and C-130 will stop at BTV for Customs. You will have the option to offboard there. We will stop at an FBO with easy access to the commercial terminal for connecting travel. We should arrive in the early afternoon at ~1600 local, the exact time TBD by the pilots. Plan travel accordingly.
Pituffik Lodging
The double occupancy rooms in the Flat Tops are approximately 20’ x 12’. Here are some pictures (shown in single occupancy configuration):
These rooms will be fitted with either two beds or a bunk bed. These are full-size beds.
If the rooms have two side-by-side beds, there will be no room for a desk.
The official on base urged us to bring bedding (sheets, pillows, and covers). They expect a very busy summer season in Pituffik and can not guarantee bedding for everyone.
I realize this is sub-optimal, I share your concerns. At the same time, we will operate in a very remote location during busy times. I promise we will make every attempt to improve on the lodging situation.
Hangar Working Space
The plan is to operate out of hangar 8. ESPO will configure this as the project workspace. Here’s a crude diagram giving you an idea of the layout.
This is a picture from a past deployment in Hangar 8.
ESPO is shipping 20 6’ tables and 40 chairs; we have promises from the base for more tables and chairs. We expect to have sufficient workspace for everyone. We plan to set up one table/instrument.
ESPO also shipped sufficient extension cords and power strips to accommodate everyone in the hangar. Please bring instrument-specific power cords and adapters.
The ‘Office Space’ will be used for flight planning. We are exploring additional working space for flight briefs and other needs.
We will have StarLink-based internet. The equipment is at McGuire and ready to be shipped to Pituffik.
Other considerations
There are mosquitoes during the summer months in Pituffik, and depending on the weather, they can be pretty bad. ESPO plans to ship generic mosquito repellant just in case. However, we all have individual preferences and tolerances for DEET concentrations and aromas, so please plan to bring your favorite mosquito deterrence (spray, wipes, or nets).
Also, depending on the weather, the mud situation on base can be pretty bad. Please bring sturdy footwear; however, plan on it getting very dirty.
