Hi all,

Things have been going well here in Southampton.

We’ve shipped more than 15 different shipments of frozen sea water samples, packed in either liquid nitrogen, dry ice or tech. ice, back to various the institutions. All shipments need to be packed in a specific way, are time sensitive, and need to be tracked from departure to arrival at the final destinations. We’ve had great success considering the shipping hurdles we have encountered. Shipping in general has been a slow and painful process with it being very difficult to book air cargo and sea shipments globally.

Sommer, Stevie, and I have prepared and packed all the general cargo, 11 sea containers worth of gear. We have 5 leased containers stored at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) which are packed and ready to go. We are waiting on the rest of the steamship line containers to arrive and we’ll pack them next week. Work continues wrapping up the various air shipments which will all depart early next week.

The NOC support staff have been really accommodating and very friendly. They have provided a level of support that I don’t think I have experienced at any other deployment location, it’s been great.

Sommer departed the UK for home on Friday. Stevie and I will continue to work on the remaining air shipments and pack the rest of the sea containers, with plans to leave Southampton by the end of the week.

Life in the UK is good. The COVID situation is similar to what we are dealing with in the US. About half of the people walking around the streets are wearing masks, and masks are required when entering any business. We were lucky and only had to quarantine for 5 days, using the UK government approved Test and Release Scheme program, instead of the usual 10 days. I did require us to do a series of 3 tests and be monitored by the UK government with daily phone calls and a surprise visit to by UK Border Protection at the hotel. The weather has been amazing and warm, it has only rained on us a couple of times while to trying pack equipment.
