Ray and Ron,
Excellent news.
We will ask you for a review of our text involving the AGAGE results before finalizing the report.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your encouragement. Having received no concerns or objections from any of the addressees in my earlier message, and with Ron’s concurrence, you have our approval. As you note, there certainly are significant benefits of highlighting AGAGE’s contributions in support of the MP.
Best, Ray

Ray,
Thank you for your reply on behalf of the AGAGE team. This is good news to us and we will await final approval from the team.
I think one benefit of this particular add-on task given to the SAP is that it will highlight the outstanding support that AGAGE provides to the Mont Prot.

Dave

Hello Dave, Lucy, Ken and Bonfils,
Thanks for your e-mail. Just two days ago we had the first meeting of the newly established AGAGE Steering Committee. One of the items on its agenda was a similar request for updated AGAGE CH4 and N2O for the IPCC. We are in complete agreement regarding the importance of providing AGAGE data for such global assessment efforts, and we don’t foresee any issue in providing the updated data and derived emissions for your report to the OEWG. Indeed, most of the data are already available on-line.
We are including the AGAGE Steering Committee in this reply to be sure that there are no issues of which we are unaware. As it happens, Matt Rigby is a committee member and its current Convener, so this should be a straightforward request to answer. Also, on the subject of HFC-23, Matt and Simon O’Doherty (who is also on our Steering Committee) have a Bristol PhD student, Ben Adam, who is working on HFC-23 inversions of AGAGE data with Luke Western. This may be of value to the SAP and TEAP report you mention, as long as it does not undercut Ben’s work.
As always, please reference the AGAGE ESSD paper cited below, and the AGAGE website, in any use of the data. Incidentally, the hosting of the AGAGE website is in the process moving to NASA, but we don’t yet know when this move will be completed.
Best,
Ray and Ron

Subject: Montreal Protocol Report request
Dear Ray and Ron,
At the last Meeting of the Parties in Nairobi last October, Parties to the Montreal Protocol made several decisions in which they requested more information from SAP and TEAP about a number of issues (see attached--Decision XXXV/6 and XXXV/9). As SAP Co-chairs we hope not to burden the atmospheric science community overly with additional requests and tasks outside the regular 4-year cycle, but hope that you might agree to have updated AGAGE data and derived emissions included in a short report that is being compiled by us together with the TEAP.
Specifically, we believe that adding two years (so 2021 and 2022) to the global mole fractions and global emissions estimated from AGAGE (and NOAA) for dichloromethane and carbon tetrachloride would be highly relevant to these decisions and of interest to the Parties in this brief update. Steve Montzka has agreed to provide the information from NOAA, and he in turn has been in contact with Matt Rigby and Luke Western, asking if they would have the time to provide the AGAGE data, and also the emission calculations for these gases for both NOAA and AGAGE. They have responded positively to this request.
So, would you be willing for updated results from AGAGE for these two gases and these two years to be included in this interim report to be delivered to the Parties in advance of their next Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furldefense.com%2Fv3%2F__https%3A%2Fozone.unep.org%2Fmeetings%2F46th-meeting-open-ended-working-group-parties__%3B!!Mih3wA!FfmyZRsviON6aGPDkgH8qDLQT56d6nF80le_Gz3_jI1crbIoqOU3TEXoQ0V6vwepUCdR2uOJNsiKlf6XwmRr1wMb%24&data=05%7C02%7Cagage-sc%40espo.nasa.gov%7Ccc1dd76c4870450d96f808dc58d8c2f8%7C7005d45845be48ae8140d43da96dd17b%7C0%7C0%7C638482935206915227%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=lUrYralFqgPWn6wyP8hsfFeatyGetliQaZxp7w0ME%2B8%3D&reserved=0>) meeting in July?
Note that decision XXXV/7 in the attached file has to do with HFC-23. We very much appreciated your willingness to share your updated data for this gas, which was presented in a side event with the Parties at the Meeting of Parties (MOP) last October and at the OEWG held earlier in the year in Bangkok. Those presentations were well received, and as a result, we (SAP and TEAP) have been "rewarded" by being tasked with also updating the data and science on HFC-23. This process is underway, is being led by Steve Montzka in collaboration with TEAP, and has a slightly longer time-frame for completion (late summer). We also hope that you will consider allowing updated AGAGE data (2021 and 2022) to be included in that report for this important chemical.
Looking forward to hearing your reply,
Regards,
Dave Fahey/Lucy Carpenter/Ken Jucks/Bonfils Safari, SAP Co-chairs
