Mission: Matusevich 01
Priority: High
This mission is designed to survey the lower Matusevich Glacier and its ice shelf, plus adjoining Lauritzen Bay and the Slava Ice Shelf, on a 10 km grid. We also fly a flux gate upstream of the area. In addition, we fly an ICESat-2 track as a tie line for the ice shelf grid, and we also refly the 2013 OIB centerline of the Matusevich Glacier and shelf, which can serve as an additional tie line since its lower portion is very straight. The companion Matusevich 02 mission improves the grid density to 5 km.
This mission got off to an early start and proceeded very smoothly, with only light to moderate katabatic flow from eastern Wilkes Land experienced while on-station. This mission has something for everyone: flowline, ice-shelf grid and a fluxgate, so it was the favored choice of the high-priority missions in the region. All instruments performed well with 100% data collection during a total survey time of 3 hours, and a ramp pass at 1,500 ft AGL. This was also the last OIB mission that Jim Yungel joins, and we thank him for his extraordinary efforts on behalf of ATM and OIB over the years.
