Flight Reports began being entered into this system as of 2012 flights. If there were flights flown under an earlier log number the flight reports are not available online.
Mission: Northwest Coastal A (priority: baseline)
This is a new mission, created from the 2010-2012 “Northwest Coastal” suite of missions by sampling individual coast-parallel lines from those flights to form a grid spaced at 30-35 km from the coast to near the 2000m contour line. This is one of three missions designed in this way, which together form a 10 km grid in the area. The others are Northwest Coastal B and C. We also add two additional bedrock-mapping lines in the Tracy/Heilprin catchment. This flight is assigned a baseline priority for 2016 because it continues an intra-annual time series with the spring and fall 2015 campaigns along these lines.
We ran out of opportunities to fly this line as a Thule-based flight, and the day of our transit from Thule to Kangerlussuaq became our only chance for it. Conducting a science flight on a transit day is challenging for many reasons, including logistics and weather. But today the field team pushed hard and took advantage of a small window of good weather along the upper Baffin Bay coast. We had to remove the uppermost coast-parallel line, along with two shorter fluxgate lines around Inglefield fjord, from the flight plan due to time constraints. We lost only very small areas of the lines due to clouds.
All instruments performed normally today. The aircraft was packed very tightly with luggage and ground equipment for the transit and this created occasional problems for the instrument operators (simply reaching switches and monitoring displays can be difficult). However they all ultimately operated successfully, thanks in part to the efforts of the NOAA crew who carefully arranged and rearranged the cargo with this in mind.
