Comments:SW Coastal C route flown. Low clouds, rain and snow on departure out of Kanger continued to nearly the first inland point. The coastal area near the turnaround point had low clouds associated with the N-S frontal area so the last 7-8 NM of the leg to point 9 were obscured as were the first 20-25 of the westbound leg (points 10-11). The final two legs in the Kanger transitional ice sheet area were completely obscured with low clouds so the flight was terminated early and another instrument approach was required prohibiting any ramp passes.

Mission Summary: 

Mission: Falcon Southwest Coastal C (priority: low)

This mission is one of three (with Falcon Southwest Coastal A and B), which together refly most of the the “Southwest Coastal A and B” missions flown in Spring 2016. This flight covers individual lines that were not flown in Spring 2016, however. These three flights work together in an interlaced (working upward from the coast) manner. This particular flight concentrates on the third and sixth lowermost of the coast-parallel lines, plus two additional lines covering a southwestern lobe of the ice sheet near Sukkertoppen.

Weather across the southern 2/3 of Greenland was adversely affected by an unusual west-moving front advancing from a strong low pressure system in the Greenland Sea, and also by onshore winds roughly from the direction of Disko Bay blowing moisture onto the south-central west coast and onto that flank of the ice sheet.  This left an open area along the southwest coast, which we took advantage of.  We successfully obtained data along both long coast-parallel lines with the exception of 40-60 km of their eastern ends, which were clouded.  We also elected not to attempt the two short lines near Sukkertoppen as they were covered in a low stratus deck.

All instruments performed well.
