Remains of the Kee Bird

The remains of the "Kee Bird", a U.S. B-29 reconnaissance aircraft which conducted an emergency landing on a frozen lake in the late 1940s, during the early days of the Cold War.  The crew was eventually rescued unharmed, but the aircraft remained on the lakebed, undisturbed and almost entirely intact, until 1994.  At that point a privately-financed recovery effort began, but it ended dismally one year later when the by-then flight-ready vintage B-29 caught fire during a taxi test and was destroyed.  The site is located on rocky terrain between the Humboldt and Petermann Glaciers, very close aboard IceSat-2 line 1246.  We directly overflew the site today.
