About 35-40 minutes into the flight, one of four navigation units on TN871 failed. Under this circumstance, the Flight Operations Manual instructs the Pilots to land as soon as practical. The decision was made to burn off fuel for about 3 hours in the restricted area before landing. This is not considered an inflight emergency. Landing occurred without incident and the navigation unit has been replaced.

Mission Summary: 

This was an attempted flight to sample Tropical Storm Gabrielle after its reformation into a named storm. However, the flight was scrubbed and the airplane returned to Wallops due to a navigation unit failure before the aircraft was able to do any science on station.
