OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: The Arctic Ocean once again looks like it will be low cloud covered, so not likely for a sea ice mission. We still have some land ice mission possibilities for our last flight of the campaign that appear viable with current weather forecasts.

OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: Today was the last possible science mission for the Arctic summer 2019 campaign. Tomorrow the OIB team will transit from Thule Greenland to Houston Texas and begin de-installation of the instruments.

OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: Just south of Umanaq in the area of Jakobshavn Glacier looks like it will be clear for tomorrow, allowing for us to hopefully fly a land ice mission there. Northeast Greenland is still socked in with clouds, preventing missions there. A high pressure system over the Arctic Ocean is forming, hopefully allowing to get one more sea ice mission later this week.

OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: Based on the forecasts this morning, there is a potential for a medium-priority sea ice mission, however we need to monitor the conditions in the Arctic Ocean throughout the day. Northeast Greenland is still out of the question for tomorrow due to low cloud coverage there from a low pressure system off of the coast.

OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: Conditions worsen in the Arctic Ocean tomorrow, leaving us with no possible science missions to fly. Northeast Greenland appears to also be cloud covered tomorrow. Luckily we have one more option south of Thule which we will likely fly depending on the forecasts and satellite imagery in the morning.

OUTLOOK FOR MONDAY: Tomorrow, Sunday (09/08/19), is a hard-down day for the OIB team and G-V crew due to a Thule airport closure. However, weather forecasts for Monday are promising for a low-latency sea ice mission, the first of this campaign. This mission will likely take place northeast of Greenland in the Lincoln Sea.

OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: Low pressure system still remains in the Arctic Ocean, meaning no viable sea ice mission options. Just South of Thule along the coast looks clear, similar to parts of NE Greenland, however it appears that central Greenland will have some clouds.
Mission: Zachariae-79N
Priority: High

OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: Unfavorable conditions still linger for a sea ice mission due to a strong low pressure system located in the Arctic Ocean, however missions in Northeast Greenland look promising.

Mission: ICESat-2 North
Priority: High

Flight Report 09/09/19

OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: There appear to be more low clouds moving into north central and northeast Greenland tomorrow from a low-pressure system just off the eastern coast of Greenland, bringing clouds and moisture onto the ice sheet. There might be another small break in the clouds in the Lincoln Sea farther west than today’s mission which might be viable, or a couple of land ice missions south of Thule along the coasts.
