Comments:G-LiHT sortie to the Raleigh-Durham / Duke Forrest target area. Overall, data was taken on 3 runs, none of which were promising any results due to cloud coverage. The morning weather reports and forecasts indicated that Duke Forrest was better than the Parker tracks WRT cloud coverage. At the time, there was little cloud coverage. Enroute to the area there were scattered clouds with 2000’ bases and 3500’ tops. The clouds became more prominent the closer we got to the area, yet there was a clear area only 10 miles west. We did one run in the solar principal plane at 4,500’ and then dropped down below the clouds to 1,500’ to repeat. At the moment we crossed the tower, the Hyplant instrument had an anomaly that required further investigation. Following this, we tried the JC track line at 1,500’ since it wasn’t collocated. This too had cloud cover above. We decided to land at KRDU to see if waiting on the ground would rescue some of the day. Unfortunately, the weather pattern was such that the winds blowing from the east were bringing in more moisture from the Atlantic ocean and the low pressure area over the ocean such that no cloud clearing was anticipated. We decided to ferry home. On the trip home, the Hyplant instrument worked fine and the anomaly could not be repeated.
