Comments:All, below is my information from DAWN’s DATA flight #5, Wed 28 Jun. Target area VA-beach, overall very effective. N528NA Takeoff: 0845 Landing: 1112 Duration: 2.5 hrs (0.8 hr above 12.5K) Crew: Slover (PIC), Kagey (SIC), Grant (QNC), Cowen (QNC) Preflight and takeoff procedures were nominal. #2 engine ground acceleration behaved normal today. Larry got up out of his seat passing 5K to turn on DAWN systems, and was complete powering up the laser at the west end of the work area. From there we descended, leveling off at the south-east end of the work area and initiated a SE-NW diagonal data run to begin the E-W runs at the NW point for VA-beach. The weather in the research area off VA beach was excellent. We flew at 5,000’ all day and no clouds were present below. Data lines ran from 1306Z to 1453Z in the following order: SE-NW diagonal, 1, 6, 2, 7, 3, 8, 4, 9, 5, 10, 11, 12. We overflew the Chesapeake Light Tower at 4,500’ MSL at approximately 1456Z. The passes were in the following order (times were rounded to nearest minute to help extract data): Diagonal: 1306Z – 1312Z (SE-NW) Line 1: 1315Z – 1319Z (W-E) Line 6: 1323Z – 1328Z (E-W) Line 2: 1331Z – 1335Z (W-E) Line 7: 1339Z – 1345Z (E-W) Line 3: 1349Z – 1353Z (W-E) Line 8: 1356Z – 1401Z (E-W) Line 4: 1406Z – 1410Z (W-E) Line 9: 1413Z – 1419Z (E-W) Line 5: 1423Z – 1427Z (W-E) Line 10: 1431Z – 1436Z (E-W) Line 11: 1439Z – 1444Z (W-E) Line 12: 1447Z – 1453Z (E-W) Recommendations: - During the flight we recalled that last Oct/Nov one middle line was repeated which we have not done in any of the 3 VA beach flights this year. Crew discussed among selves and decided it wasn’t needed today, but if the PIs liked that from last year, please let us know and we can accommodate. Aircraft issues: - Both QNC headsets still had a 1 cps click that the pilots did not have. Avionics replaced the headsets from the previous sortie but the issue was still present. Next event scheduled: Mon AM 0800 brief/0830 board/0900 takeoff for either VA beach or Charlotte. Location decision to be made Monday morning. Fuel load for VA beach will be 2250 lbs, fuel load for Charlotte will be 2750 lbs.
