Purpose of Flight:Science
Comments:NASA 528 returned to KLFI yesterday completing the Calipso-Bermuda Cal/Val deployment. Crew was Slover, Blankenship, and Hare. The sortie’s objectives were to underfly Calipso south-to-north at 1744Z and to observe ocean gradients in the Gulf of Maine. Due to weather forecasts for a lot of clouds in New England, we elected to drop the Gulf of Maine and ops stop at Quonset State, R.I. Instead, we proceeded to AR-9 from the end of the Calipso line. Landing at KPHF for customs was on-time and uneventful. A quick transition to KLFI was flown landing just before the major rain and thunderstorms. Weather on the Calipso line was very favorable. At 1718Z the area was predominated by low clouds and some very light cirrus above. RSP operation was questionable as Rich tried several times to get it to turn on without error messages. At 1733Z, the low clouds dissipated and there was no cirrus above. At the time of overpass, 1744Z at N36 42.8/W065 54.9, there were scattered/broken low deck below and no cirrus. At 1807Z, there were some low clouds and no cirrus. The flight to Virginia was just south of SIGMET Delta, so it was a very good decision not to proceed to New England. Overall total Calipso Cal/Val flight time logged in NAMIS from ICF on 3 Jun through Bermuda return on 19 Jun has been 39.0 hours (to include a pilot night proficiency flight, and the transition from PHF to LFI for Customs).
