Subject: WB-57F flight report_020709 Time: 9:51 AM Date:7/10/02 Update as of 1000 EDT 020710 1. Yesterday's flight achieved (in a spectacular manner) most of its objectives, which included sampling tropical subvisible cirrus, providing measurements during the Terra and Aqua satellite overpasses, and characterizing the tropical tropopause layer (TTL). The WB-57F explored an area near the tropopause between approximately 47 kft and 58 kft. There were numerous intersects with thin and thick cirrus layers. Preliminary looks at the data indicate that a number of intensely interesting phenomenon were characterized. The flight required precision coordination between the ER-2, the Proteus, and the WB-57F. The pilots are to be commended for their excellent job at coordinating the aircraft. Near the end of the flight, the WB-57F experienced a 60-Hz power failure, which resulted in the interruption of the operation of a number of instruments. The aircraft system will be repaired and ready for the next flight. 2. The aircraft left Key West at 11:30a EDT, and returned at approximately 4:51p EDT. 3. The next flight opportunity is tomorrow (Thursday, 11 July). The flight objective will be to study Florida cirrus anvils. 4. Our thanks go to the WB-57F crew and operations personnel for doing an outstanding job yesterday. We especially want to thank Steve Feaster and Brian Barnett for the terrific deep-south flight. Their skillful efforts resulted in a spectacular data set!
