Subject: WB-57F flight report_020707 Date:7/8/02 Update as of 5:20p EDT 020708 1. Yesterday's flight provided a tremendous opportunity to sample numerous thunderstorm anvils. The WB-57F spent well over half of the flight in clouds, working a line of storms at a number of different altitudes and distances from the convective cores. There was one particularly interesting event at approximately 72,500 UT seconds, at which time the plane encountered moderate turbulence and several instruments experienced malfunctions. Post-flight analysis indicates that this was a significant excursion into an anvil, and it should provide some very interesting particle and tracer-gas data. 2. The aircraft left Key West at 12:57p EDT, and returned at approximately 6:09p EDT. 3. The next flight opportunity is tomorrow (Tuesday, 9 July), and will be a southern survey flight. The flight objectives include sampling tropical subvisible cirrus, providing measurements during the Terra and Aqua satellite overpasses, and characterizing the tropical tropopause layer (TTL). 4. Our thanks go to the WB-57F crew and operations personnel for doing an outstanding job yesterday. We especially want to thank Ed Schneider and Shelley Hilden for exploring the extensive cirrus shield off the western Florida coast!
