Proteus Flight # 187 29 July, 2002 Objectives: The Crystal-Face mission today was to underfly the Terra satellite at ~ 1600 GMT over the western Bahamas, and then fly lines defined by NPOL over the south Florida region (eastern & western C-F ground sites, across the peninsula, and surrounding water areas) contributing to tropical cirrus cloud characterization and coincident observations with the other Project aircraft. Summary: Due to the work needed to repair yesterday’s starter/generator failure, the Proteus takeoff was after the other project aircraft at 16:21 GMT. Accordingly, the Terra underflight portion of the mission was not part of the Proteus flight plan. While at this writing detailed performance of the instruments is not known, it appears that NAST-I, NAST-M, FIRSC, and RSP had nominal performance during the mission (i.e. from pilot reports and initial post-flight inspection of data files). It is noted, however, that the POLDER instrument did not operate during this final flight. Proteus landed at ~ 22:30 GMT.
