Citation Flight Notes July 26, 2002 Crew: Le Hardy, Sprosty, Askelson, Twohy, Willis 202909: Takeoff 203052: CPI may be acting a little goofy. Didn't get a background. 203349: Working on CPI. It had trouble getting a background image. 203530: A: DHP 290/074. 7 miles from heavier convection. 203700: Looks like CPI is up and O.K. 204115: Waiting for clearance to our point. 204642: Cleared to our point. 204759: Lidar is operating @NPOL. 205657: B: DHP 297/081. NPOL says spiral at this point. 210126: Working on getting to B, but it's in Cypress approach and so a spiral looks really tough (nearly impossible). ~2105: C: DHP 291/081; D: DHP 287/062. Couldn't get that point so ATC gave us 300/070. 211038: Flying direct to D. Then, we will try to go to C and do a spiral there. 211410: King probe doesn't appear to be working. Doesn't have 5 volts. King probe value seems to be pegged at -1.0. 212021: At D, heading to C. Altitude 21,000 ft (hereafter, 210 ft). ~2122: F: DHP 301/083. This point is actually the nav-aid for Lee county. Going to go to this and spiral up. 212440: At C, starting descent. 213508: NPOL has found a bright band. We are to proceed to F. ~2140: H: DHP 296/087. NPOL says go here and do a spiral ASAP. 214750: At 0 deg C, 700 ft/min. 214955: At 3 deg C, ramping up to 1600 ft/min. 215032: Out of cloud. 215206: Working on clearance for H. 215223: CPI is condensated. 215534: At F, waiting for clearance to get to high altitude. ~2202: I: DHP 297/091. Not using this point, we are staying with H. 220946: Beginning descent over H at 300 ft/min. 221408: Lightning. 221606: Bright band about 20 miles wide running from I to H and on to SE (NPOL). 221630: ATC may screw up our descent. 221915: Some variation in cloud properties as we circle. 222253: Got clearance down to 110 ft. Did only have clearance to 130 ft. 222523: NPOL says we are on only game in town. So, we are going to do this again. 223104: Ramping speed up to 700 ft/min. 223128: 1 degree difference between RW and LW Ts. 223348: Resetting HVPS. Stuck bit just occurred. 223609: Finished downward spiral. ~2232: J: DHP 299/093. 223650: Requesting spiral up, direct to J, then will try to spiral down. 224543: @210 ft over H. Going direct to J as soon as we are cleared to do so. 225145: Starting descent. 230028: Key west weather: 120 @13 kts; visibility is 7 miles; few 2500; bkn 25000, altimeter 30.07. 230410: King probe still looks wrong. 231154: NPOL says direct to western ground site and then RTB for a safe route home. 231316: Temps are close again (RW and LW): 231703: ATC needs us down in a hurry. Truncated spiral at 130 ft and about +1.4 deg C. ~233502: Starting maneuver tests (we are on the way back to Key West). First, we are doing pitches. 234026: Starting yaws. 234414: Done with maneuvers and are RTB. 235643: Landing. 3.5 hours. Summary: 1. Spiral over C from 210 to 100. Started at 300 ft/min, went to 700 ft/min at 0 deg C, and 1600 ft/min starting at +3 deg C. 2. Spiral Over H from 210 to 110. Started at 300 ft/min and jumped to 700 ft/min at +2 deg C. Ended at that descent rate. 3. Spiraled at J from 210 to 130 (~1.4 deg C). ATC truncated our spiral at that point, at which time we descended rapidly to 110 (if memory serves). Descent speed to 130 was 300 ft/min. 4. 210 was ~-12 deg C and 100 was ~+9 deg C. Instrument Issues: Took a while for the CPI to get going. Once it did, it was fine except for a period during which it experienced condensation. Cycled HVPS probe (~2234). King probe appeared to not be working.
