Citation Flight Notes July 25, 2002 Crew: Le Hardy, Sprosty, Askelson, Twohy, DeMott 150449: Takeoff 150620: Check and all systems are on. 151353: Heading to eastern ground site. 151450: NPOL says get as high as we can and spiral down and report back. 152517: NPOL alerted us about cell approaching east ground site. 153114: 307 (hundred) ft and just entered some cloud. 153220: In cloud now at 310 ft. 154045: Was holding over eastern site and are rising to 330 ft. Will run leg from A to B: A: DHP 323/018; B: DHP 193/015. 154229: Bullet rosettes. 154410: Columns, plates, and lots of bullet rosettes. 154810: Out of cloud. 155100: Still waiting for clearance for A to B. 155200: East site reports cirrus up to 300 ft. 155810: At B, heading to A, at 330 ft. 160119: In cloud. 160333: Out of cloud. 160420: King at -0.031. 160450: At A. Trying to get 350 ft. 160745: Got 350. 161000: At A, heading to B, at 348 ft, climbing to 350 ft. 161120: About at top of cirrus. 161736: Penetrated top of Cb, saw some needles. Some pretty big particles. 162121: Just past B, dropping to 330 ft, heading to A. 162625: Entering cirrus. 162640: Convection over eastern ground site has precluded us from doing spirals there. Convection encroaching from SE making things messy over eastern ground site. 162940: Going to head to western ground site. ~1629: NPOL reports cirrus over western site from 350 to 420. ~1635: C: DHP 296/070; D: 272/055. 164221: Back in cloud. Nice bullet rosettes. Heading to D from B. 164947: At D, heading to C at 330 ft. 165747: At C, going to try for 350 ft. Heading to 350 ft. 170123: Lidar at NPOL off. 170210: At C, heading to D, at 350 ft. 170300: Paul DeMott is sampling now. 170647: Back in cloud. More bullet rosettes. 170743: Out of cloud just over western ground site. 171318: At D going to C at 370 ft. 171440: in cloud. Beautiful bullet rosettes. 171910: Approaching C. Going to go for 390 ft. 172529: Traveling C to D. Reaching 390 ft part way (~9.8 miles in). 173043: Back in cirrus. Pretty much at top of cirrus. More bullet rosettes. 173329: Got clearance for spiral. Heading from D to western site for spiral. 173937: Started spiral down over western ground site. Will spiral to 310 ft. 174118: Few lines in 2DC. 174235: Paul D. is at -45 (C and above homogeneous freezing. But, losing some pressure. 174352: ATC needs us down right now, so we are abandoning the spiral. Spiraled to about 360 ft. 174535: Received directions to go to eastern site and spiral up. 174720: Up as high as we can get (NPOL instructions). 174958: Bases at eastern site at 280 ft (from NPOL). ~1753: In cloud en route to eastern ground site. 175459: Descending to 270 ft to get below cloud base to try to spiral up. 175851: Working on getting clearance for spiral. 175932: Beginning upward spiral starting at 290 ft. Cleared up to 370 ft. Spiraling over eastern ground site. ~1804: F: DHP 236/008; G: 179/036. 180810: In spiral, but may not get to much. Kind of open right over eastern ground site. 180918: Hit cloud at 350 ft. 181720: Spiral complete. Heading to G. Altitude is 370 ft. 182408: NPOL lidar is back up. 182652: At G, turning to F at 370 ft. 183130: Trouble with CPI. Got a little cold. Heater shut off for some reason. Cycled CPI and heaters came back up and CPI is fine. 183347: H: DHP 232/063. 183928: Fought to stay at 370 ft so we can execute our spiral downward over H. 184104: In cloud. Bullet rosettes and columns. 184339: Cleared down to 290 ft. Will spiral at 750 ft/min and will ask for lower altitudes as we go. 184432: Skimming along top of cirrus. 184902: Begin downward spiral. Started at 370 ft. 185245: Small particles. Saw nothing on HVPS. In case it had trouble, we cycled it. 185501: -50 on CFDC. 185633: ATC stopped out downward spiral at 320 ft and put us on right turns. 185929: Spiraling down to 190 ft. This spiral is to the right of the spiral down to 310. 190121: Few small crystals mixed in. 190620: Very irregular crystals. 191320: Spiral truncated @240 ft owing to ATC. We are RTB. 193147: Landed. 4.5 hours. Summary: 1. Runs from A to B (eastern ground site) from 330 to 350. Maritime generated cirrus was flowing in from the SE. Steps at 330, 350 (top of cirrus), 330. 2. Runs from D to C (western ground site) from 330 to 390. Steps at 330, 350, 370, 390 (top of cirrus). 3. Spiraled from 390 to 360 over western site. Had clearance to 310 but ATC contacted us and needed us down right away. So, abandoned spiral at ~364. Dropped fast to below 330 so not sure what base was--maybe 350. 4. Spiraled from 290 to 370 over eastern ground site. Didn't get too much, but saw some cloud above 350. 5. One run from G to F at 370 (eastern ground site). No cloud. 6. Traveled to H and spiraled down from 370 to 320. At 320 ATC stopped our spiral and made use do right turns (spiral was to the left). Spiraled from 320 to 240 to right and ATC halted us again. At that point, RTB. Instrument Issues: Cycled HVPS in case it had trouble, although I believe that it was fine. CPI heater dropped out and some images were compromised (~1831). Small leak in CFDC corrected in flight. Leak produced too much background for P. DeMott. Occasional stuck bit in 2DC.
