Citation Flight Notes July 18, 2002 Crew: Le Hardy, Martin, Poellot, Twohy, Rogers 165043 Takeoff A DHP 257/045 B DHP 319/019 170130 Climbing to A. 171100 Anvil cirrus. T = -21.9C, FL250 172600 Heading 035 toward convection. 173030 Photo of radar and 2 of target cloud. Target has blowoff above our level. T= -21.3C 173330 Mixed phase, mostly ice 173540 We'll climb to colder temps - looking for -35C 174434 Slight inversion at around 30,500', 290 mb. 174600 AT FL310, T= -35.2C, 287 mb 175000 Core penetration. Moderate turbulence. 175230 Will penetrate the edge on the way back. 175308 Into small turret on edge. T= -35.5C. Top at our level. 175530 Returning south, will select new target. 180120 We'll penetrate a small turret at our level. 180130 In cloud. 180345 In edge of cloud 181100 Have reversed, climb to FL330, t= -41C, to repenetrate. 181228 In cloud, older. 181320 Out. Would like to reverse, but are unable to get clearance. 181900 Lining up to repenetrate at -41C, FL330. 181934 In cloud, T= -40.8C. Short encounter. 182130 Back in cloud, extended path with >1.0 g/m3 ice. 182500 Coming up on cloud, top not much above our level. 182615 Turning to go to new point. We will do a spiral down through anvil that the jP-3 has been studying. Maybe the Otter will find a new target. Point: DHP 259/043 183310 In cloud 183630 Waiting for clearance. 183710 Start spiral down, 750 fpm. Lots of small spheres, some big irregular crystals. Pitot nose, sideslip plugged. 184520 Occasional very light turbulence. 185400 FL230, in spiral descent. Cloud has been fairly uniform, T= -17C. 185700 Picking up some impacted ice on wing lead edges. 190130 Holding at FL190 for ATC. 190500 17,500', out of cloud 190742 End of spiral down. We'll spiral up to FL250 and go to the north for possible new opportunities. 191030 Will not spiral - have been given direct climb. 191055 Light turbulence. Going to Lee County VOR to hold for new plan. 192000 Photo of pileus. Will request FL310 (-35C) 193150 About to penetrate, -35C, good water(ice) content. 193433 Photo of tower we penetrated. Will climb to FL330 (-40C) 193849 In cloud, -40.5C. Will try -45C next. 194600 Lined up on tower - not much left at this altitude. In cloud from about 194619-194630. 194720 Will hit another turret at -45C. Nope, went over it. 195430 Lining up at -40C for edge of growing tower. 200000 RTB 203043 Land 3.7 hours Summary: 1. Penetrated convective cell at -21C. Then another more vigorous core at -35C, followed by a sample at the edge of that core. Then sampled another cloud at -35C. 2. Repeatedly sampled a decaying cloud at -35C, -40C, -40C and -40C. Then another cloud at that temperature. 3. Did a spiral down in uniform anvil conditions from FL330 to FL160. 4. Sampled another cell at -35C, -40C and -45C. Then did one more at -40C. Instrument Issues: Had occasional plugging of pitot nose and sidelsip ports, possible the attack ports. This could affect wind calculations.
